  • Behaviour Hubs programme

    Published 06/11/23

As part of our drive for improvement, Chaucer School is taking part in the Behaviour Hubs programme, a Department for Education-funded programme to improve all aspects of behaviour in schools. We have been paired with an exemplary lead school who will guide us through a year of support in which we will further develop new behaviour cultures to make sure that all pupils can learn in a calm, safe and supportive environment.

As part of this programme of support, we will be gathering the views of pupils and staff, to understand how they perceive behaviour in school. This will help us to identify areas for improvement. This survey will take place in school time and should last no more than ten minutes.

Your child will receive an invitation next week to complete the survey via their school email address, using Microsoft Forms. Students will be identifiable by year group, but not by name, as we may share the collated responses with our lead school and the DFE as part of the programme. If you do not wish your child to take part in this survey, please let us know by the end of this school week (Friday the 10th of November) so that we can ensure your child does not receive the email to participate.

  • World Mental Health Day 2023

    Published 10/10/23
Staff at Chaucer School dressed in yellow on World Mental Health Day (10th October) as part of YoungMinds’ #HelloYellow campaign, which called on people to stand together in support of young people struggling with their mental health, to show they matter and deserve the help they need, when they need it, no matter what.

Young people are experiencing a unique set of pressures for a generation growing up, living through a pandemic and cost of living crisis against the backdrop of global instability, combined with other factors such as academic pressure, all of which is taking a toll on their mental health.

YoungMinds is urging the Government to prioritise young people’s mental health, including providing early support in communities, increasing help in schools and reducing waiting times.

Laura Bunt, Chief Executive at YoungMinds, said: “We want to thank Chaucer School for their support for #HelloYellow. By wearing yellow, they’ve shown young people’s mental health matters. This comes at a time when the young generation are facing a unique set of pressures, with more young people than ever before needing support for their mental health and many facing long waits for help.

  • Ofsted Inspection 11th-12th October 2023

    Published 10/10/23

We have just been informed that Ofsted will inspecting Chaucer School on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th October 2023, and they would like to know what you think about the school. Your views about the school are important.

If you are a registered parent or carer of a student at Chaucer, you can share your views by completing Ofsted's online survey, Ofsted Parent View, at: https://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk

Ofsted Parent View asks for your opinion on some aspects of the school, including the progress made by your child, the quality of teaching, how the school deals with bullying and poor behaviour. It also provides a free-text box for you to make additional comments, if you wish. The inspectors will use the online survey responses when inspecting Chaucer School.

To register your views, you will need to provide your email address, which will be held securely. It will not be used for any purpose other than providing access to the online survey. Neither schools nor Ofsted will have access to any email addresses.

Please complete the online survey as soon as possible, preferably by 11am on the first day of the inspection, as this will give the inspection team more time to consider your views. However, we will consider all online responses that are completed during the inspection, although the free-text box facility will not be available after noon on the final on-site day of the inspection.

  • RAAC Information

    Published 07/09/23

    Dear Parents and Carers,

You may have seen recent media coverage regarding Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) and its use in educational settings. RAAC is a lightweight form of concrete; because it is weaker than regular concrete, concerns have been raised about its long-term durability. Department for Education (DfE) has recently changed its guidance to education settings on the management of RAAC to take a more precautionary approach and as a result areas in affected spaces will be vacated.

We wanted to inform you that we are not affected by this decision as we do not have RAAC in any of our buildings, and therefore they will continue to function as normal. We understand that parents may want to understand more about the support to educational settings to manage RAAC safely. You can read more through the article published by the DfE on the Education Hub.

I hope that this offers reassurance.

    Yours sincerely,

    Joanna Crewe

  • Work Experience

    Published 17/07/23

In many schools, work experience relies on young people arranging their work experience placement with family or friends. But what about those with no suitable connections?

Work experience has been shown to increase future earnings and reduce the risk of being NEET (not in education or employment), so students without connections miss out on the actual experience as well as the longer-term benefits. We’re trying to help raise our students’ aspirations and confidence and improve their future chances by sourcing some placements in Sheffield.

Can you help? If you can’t host placements yourself, do you know anyone that can? Could you share this with your network (please!)?

If you can help, please email sbrown@chaucer.sheffield.sch.uk

  • Autism in Schools

    Published 14/07/23

We have been participating in the Autism in Schools Project for the past 20 months. This has enabled us to access support from the Sheffield parent / carer forum and access to an intervention for students entitled ‘Understanding Myself’ led by KIDS. As a school we have also had access to a range of training materials to develop and embed our practice at Chaucer.

In the spring of 2022 we agreed to contribute to a training video which included how we support students with ASD, both diagnosed and those awaiting assessment. This video is now being shared city wide to support training of school staff to develop skills and expertise to ensure young people across the city access the right support. A trailer has now been released that can be shared publicly.

We are really proud of the fact that Chaucer’s good practice has been recognised, and you can have a brief look at our contribution in the video below.
